Cake Make Event- Durham Cathedral

Hello! You're all invited to come to Alington House (4 North Bailey, Durham) on Saturday 25th 1.30pm- 4.30pm  to take part in making the finishing touches to the cake, when we'll be bringing all our baking together, icing the gingerbread and putting the (boiled sweet stained glass) windows in place. We'll also be selling freshly baked goodies- plenty of cake, proceeds from which will raise funds to pay for the specialist icing products. We also hope to have a couple of local food businesses…See More

"I'm worried about that too, our main cake part is made from 8, 12" squared fruit cakes, going to be heavy!"

"Thanks Nick, Sorry I didn't respond earlier! The team overall decided that since we are using fruitcake, we could stack up the basic shape using slabs of these and then use sheets of gingerbread to get the overall form/ roofs etc.like…"

We now have sourced most of the ingredients for the inner cake through donations from businesses in the Local Food Network and beyond. Baking starts this weekend! Kathleen has made the most awesome mock up template for our cathedral structure! We also have booked out the café from 1pm-5pm at Alington House, in Durham City Centre for Saturday 25th June so people can come see us put it all together, get involved and find out more about what Transition Durham and Durham Local Food Network do! …See More

"Hi, We had similar ponderings last year when we made Emerson Chambers out of cake. To cut down on the amount of cake needed, cost, and weight, we built the cake around a foil covered central box.  We then butter creamed the foil and then…"

Beginnings

We had our first meeting last Friday and have lots of great weird and wonderful ideas on how to get the cake standing upright although still deciding which is the more appropriate 'erhem'... Lego Amy?. I am also very happy to say that we already have local food businesses keen to donate some ingredients to the cake. At a later date I will let you know the exact details of where we sourced our produce from. Extremely daunting walking around the outside of the Cathedral in all its grandeur to…See More

Locally produced Cake

Hello from the Durham Local Food Network Cakebook Team!

As you may guess from the photographs, we’re very excited to be baking Durham Cathedral although with a twist….

As Local food enthusiasts, were attempting to make the cake as much as possible from locally sourced ingredients to raise awareness of the abundance of local produce available.

Where this is not possible (e.g. sugar) we hope to use Fair Trade or British produce. This will highlight the importance of ethical food sourcing and show how easy it is to help the environment by decreasing the carbon footprint of the food we consume.

Bye for now!
